TRB: Transit Data Quality

“You can’t improve what you don’t measure.”

For the past several months, I’ve been working with the incredible team at the California Integrated Travel Project (Cal-ITP) to create a helpdesk within Caltrans for transit agencies.

  • Do you want to make your fare system more equitable?
  • Do you want to reduce barriers for seniors and others with reduced fare programs?
  • Do you want to improve how your service is represented in Google Maps, or maybe just get on the map for the first time?

If you’re a transit agency in California and looking for help with that third one, then my team and I get to walk you through a suite of new free tools. Otherwise, you’re in the hands of my brilliant colleagues.

In the process of setting this all up, we interviewed dozens of transit agencies, from Anaheim to Arcata, to learn not only what solutions to provide, but how to fit those solutions into existing agency processes. We heard over and over again to work within standards: checklists, certifications, minimums, anything that staff can check off and bring to their manager.

This research, and the program it informed, is summarized in this report that was accepted for publication by the Transportation Research Board. Read the full paper below, and reach out to for more information.
