I’ve been asked many times how I find work as a freelancer. “Pitching design projects over drinks at Flora” doesn’t often work, but it’s turned into my favorite project by far.
Dozens of banners hang over the median of Oakland’s Broadway Auto Row. Dozens, but not as many as 15 years ago, when they first went up. Those that remain are faded, many have fallen, and they’re all homages to the automobile – an appropriate choice for Auto Row, but not the adjacent, lively, and pedestrian-oriented blocks within the Uptown neighborhood.
I worked with the Uptown BID and the Mayor’s office to develop these new designs, celebrating the absolutely incredible architecture of Uptown. It was an easy brainstorming process, everyone sitting around naming their favorite buildings. We had lots of ideas to choose from, and I’d be floored to get to keep going north.
These are currently at the printers, and should be hung up later this spring. I’m pretty excited to create something beautiful for public consumption, especially something that will be prominently displayed in my own neighborhood. The day they go up, look for me at Flora.
